Toshiba LifeSpace – easy-to-use personalised desktop organisation

A Toshiba-developed application suite designed to make the searching and organisation of files and projects on Toshiba laptops easy and fun

Neuss, Germany, 9th October 2009

– Toshiba Europe GmbH today introduced a new easy-to-use application suite for Toshiba laptops designed to improve productivity by facilitating the searching and organisation of files. It offers consumers and professionals a personalised approach to accessing files stored on a Toshiba laptop and helps to organise everyday projects and activities. Toshiba LifeSpace is now available at no additional cost throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa on all Toshiba laptops running Windows® 7.

“As part of Toshiba’s strong commitment to customer satisfaction we regularly conduct thorough analyses of users’ feedback,” says Thomas Teckentrup, General Manager, Toshiba Computer Systems Division Europe. “We found that a great many customers would benefit from a more intuitive user interface on their laptops that helps to organise private or business-related everyday tasks such as managing projects or holiday planning.” These findings from Toshiba’s customer care specialists are confirmed by a recent online survey1 commissioned by Toshiba which found that 64.4% of laptop users would like to have the option to create different dedicated virtual boards specific to particular tasks or projects.

This is exactly what the Toshiba LifeSpace application suite offers. At present, the suite comprises two applications – Bulletin Board and ReelTime, which are both designed to improve users’ productivity.

Bulletin Board – a personalised, project related virtual pinboard

Bulletin Board is a visual organisation tool that helps to clean up users’ desktops and facilitates the handling of everyday activities and projects. According to Toshiba’s online survey1, more than half (51.7%) of participants said they sometimes experience difficulties finding the right file. Bulletin Board helps tackle that problem. It’s like a virtual pinboard: users can drag and drop all kinds of frequently used files (photos, text documents, notes, videos, applications or web links) as thumbnail shortcuts to a virtual board, where they can be instantly accessed. Items can be removed by simply ‘unpinning’ them. Boards can be customised with different colour backgrounds, virtual sticky notes and a selection of ‘gadgets’ like clocks, calendars and to-do lists. The application allows users to create a set of up to seven clearly arranged content or project-related boards, allowing one each for different themes or projects.

ReelTime – visual timeline accelerates file search

According to the survey1, half of all users spend at least five minutes per day searching for the right files. ReelTime, the second application of Toshiba LifeSpace, is intended to accelerate file searching on Toshiba laptops with a visual timeline of recently used files. It offers users a very convenient way to find the files they are searching for. As soon as the user opens a file, ReelTime automatically adds a shortcut to the timeline, which can list up to 5000 items. In addition, several filters allow easy searching for specific files, whether photos, text documents or other files related to a specific application.

Toshiba LifeSpace – an expandable modular concept

The architecture of Toshiba LifeSpace allows the suite to be expanded with additional applications. Toshiba will continue to analyse users’ needs and use its software development expertise to create additional applications for Toshiba LifeSpace.
